New Zealand South Island (Day 1)

Day 1 TRAVEL DAY Saturday 3.2.07

The rain in Mackay lifted & we were off to Brisbane to connect with our NZ flight. Jagged a bonus by being able to book the luggage straight through to Christchurch. This was a real benefit as we were to meet for lunch with the Penridge clan to celebrate Ralph's 60th birthday at the Breakkie Creek Hotel. Did it in fine fashion with a big steak, a couple of bottles of red and a cleansing traditional xxxx off the wood.

Back to the airport for some quick duty free shopping including the obligatory booze purchases and also a new 1GB card for the camera. Thought we might have gone a bit over the top with the new card but little did I know that Jean would try to fill it on the first day. Tanqueray 1Lt for $27 or 2 for $47 ($60+ here) and a bottle of Grants so big it should have come with a cradle pourer.

On to the plane to the welcoming words " In the event the cabin loses pressure oxygen masks will drop from the console above you. Stop screaming & put the mask on. Don't panic - the hostess is trained to do that for you". Regardless of these words of advice they weren't applicable and we enjoyed an incident free and comfortable flight into Christchurch. By the time we cleared immigration & customs and caught a transit bus to the Kingsgate Auto Lodge (which gave us an early morning full tour of the city) it was well after 1am and close to 2am by the time we got to bed.
